To mark Share a Story Month this May, we arranged a creative writing competition for pupils at Wickersley Northfields Primary School in Rotherham, close to our development, The Paddocks.

Share a Story Month is a fantastic time to ignite children’s interest in reading and creative writing, encouraging primary school children to use their imaginations and test their literacy skills.

Two year five classes took part in the competition set by Harron Homes, who asked the students to write around the theme of ‘Home’. The pupils wrote a mixture of poems and short stories that included heart-warming verses of what Home meant to them and stories of a secret door in their new home which led to exciting adventures.

A winner was chosen from each class, who attended a prize giving at The Paddocks sales office. Holly Rawlinson and Mollie Owen, accompanied by their teacher Jessica Myatt, met with Sales Executive Julie Furr and Sales Manager Paul Walters who presented them with their prizes.

The two winners read their writing aloud, with Holly reading her beautiful poem about how much home meant to her and Mollie telling her magical story about finding a secret world of unicorns and chocolate in her new home.

Holly and Mollie received a Harron Homes goodie bag that included writing materials to continue their creative writing journeys and a £50 book token to encourage their reading development. Harron also presented the school with a children’s anthology of Shakespeare’s works to add to the school’s library collection.

Jessica Myatt, Assistant Head, Literacy Lead and Y5 teacher at Wickersley Northfields Primary School, said: “A big thank you to Harron Homes for arranging the competition and their kind donation of Shakespeare’s works to our library. It was great to see the children engage with the topic of ‘Home’ and create some truly lovely work.”

Natalie Griffiths, Sales and Marketing Director at Harron Homes North Midlands, said: “It was wonderful to see such talent amongst the pupils of Wickersley Primary School. We’re passionate about investing in both the community and the area, and are delighted we could help the pupils explore their literacy skills. Congratulations to Mollie and Holly and we hope they continue to enjoy reading and writing.”

The Paddocks features a range of four, and five-bedroom homes and is located at Peppercorn Way, Wickersley, Rotherham, S66 1DA. For more information contact 01709 318516, or visit the Harron website at https://www.harronhomes.com/find-a-home/south-yorkshire/the-paddocks/.
