Bricks, mortar and technology: New IT infrastructure

Harron Homes was founded in 1992, and we’re proud to have expanded our reach over the years to build developments across the nation, throughout Yorkshire, the North West, Northern Wales and the Midlands.

As we’ve grown, we’ve made changes to accommodate these developments – and one big aspect has been the way we use technology.

Think back to what your computer was like in 1992 – if you even had one back then! Needless to say, we’ve had to update our systems as the years have gone by, and we recently worked with Intrasource to undergo a big infrastructure upgrade.

Our speciality is building outstanding, quality homes, which is why we decided to focus our energies on doing what we do best and outsource our services to the experts at Intrasource in 2008.

Since then they’ve always been efficient and professional, and we knew they’d be the best people to help us when we needed to upgrade our systems.

Our IT challenges

Before the upgrade, we were operating on Windows Server 2003 and using hardware that was quickly becoming outdated. We knew we needed to switch to an up-to-date system, but many of our vital applications weren’t compatible with modern operating systems.

We needed a new server that could give us a more timely and efficient way of working, while also accommodating the software we couldn’t do without.

Our IT solution

We worked closely with the strategy and hosted service team at Instrasource to come up with a system that would allow us to operate on a new server and still access some of the older applications we need to use.

They devised a virtual server solution, allowing us to use the latest Windows Server architecture alongside the vital applications. This was accompanied by a new backup solution that restores and backs-up the virtual systems immediately.

Our IT today

We’ve seen many benefits of the new system – the new backup solution has given us improved recovery of data, and the virtualisation has allowed for shared storage and more flexibility in expanding drives. Overall, the lifespan of our vital applications has grown, and we now run on a faster and more cost-efficient server.

These changes allow us to do what we do best while operating on a system that can accommodate our needs, so we can build beautiful homes and trust our IT to provide a solid foundation!
