The garden is an important and unique aspect of a property, and it is often what makes a home come to life. This is particularly true in the warm and dry months when people spend valuable time in their outdoor space – many enjoy making their garden into a floral abode or hosting family and friends.

As we see the back of a long, drawn-out winter and say hello to the official start of spring next week, it’s time to draw attention to your garden. To make sure you can get your garden looking glorious, we’ve picked the brains of our landscaping designers, Cloverleaf, and pulled together some top-tips for you avid gardeners out there!

Start with a good tidy up – Dead head and prune any plants that are looking untidy. Up until the end of March you can remove and re-site any plants whilst they are still dormant, remembering that the more established and larger the plant, the more the risk of survival decreases. Remove any remaining leaves, weeds, twigs and any winter annuals that are past their best.

Prepare for your next plants – It’s important to nourish the soil to ensure that your summer flower bed blossoms. So, before you begin planting new bulbs, incorporate a good quality compost and peat. It’s also useful to take time to research and plan your choice of perennials, summer flowers and evergreen plants which gives the bed structure all year round.

Time to attend to the turf – If you’re thinking of laying new turf, then Spring is the ideal time to sow grass seeds before the weather becomes too warm and dry. Remember to make sure you purchase good quality seeds to achieve the desired green carpet running through your garden.

Rules of the lawn, before and after To best prepare the soil forming the base for your lawn, incorporate gritsand into the soil and ensure that there is adequate drainage by forking over or rotavating the ground. Remember that fully functioning irrigation systems are particularly crucial around grass areas! Once the grass is established, keep it healthy by applying Weed & Feed products and watering the lawn regularly through warm and dry periods.

Have your tools at the ready – After a long winter, the time is here to get out and enjoy attending to and creating a garden that you love. To make sure you can carry out all necessary jobs, big or small, check if your tool shed has everything that you need, and if all of the tools have been sharpened ready to use. After being stored away throughout the winter months, your garden machinery will probably be in need of some TLC, so doing simple maintenance such as cleaning and oiling will get it ready for the job. But remember, safety comes first! So if you notice a problem with safety features, such as guards and cut-off switches when doing your machinery checks, it’s best to contact a professional.
