It’s 2019 and New Year’s resolutions are at the forefront of all our minds – but are you yet to decide yours? If you’ve just spent your first Christmas in your new luxury home, or your move is fast approaching, what better way to start 2019 than with a deep clean of your clutter? After all, a tidy home is a tidy mind!

De-cluttering isn’t just about throwing out old possessions to free up some space, it’s about creating a new system so that you know where everything is – imagine waking up on a Saturday morning after a hard week at work, to an organised, relaxing hub where you can retreat to the sofa or make it to your gym class knowing that there’s no tidying up of those old piles of stuff to get through…

So, are you convinced of the benefits to a good old New Year clear out? Here’s some tips on how to tackle your way through the clutter to a state of organised bliss:

  1. Slowly but surely

Don’t expect a complete de-clutter of your home overnight; remember, you have collected years’ worth of possessions that will take good time to sort through properly. You don’t want to run before you can walk, so to speak, so it’s best to approach the great de-clutter as an introduction to a way of life rather than a mammoth task.

To incorporate de-cluttering into your life, start by spending 10 minutes a day sorting through your possessions – by starting small, the overall task will feel much less daunting.

  1. Organised mess

Have you ever wondered what could apply to the saying, ‘things have got to get worse before they can get better’? De-cluttering is your answer.

In order to de-clutter your home, you will need to sort everything into three piles; keep, maybe and give away – as well as bin bags for any rubbish. As these piles begin to build, the revisiting ‘maybe’ pile will enable a buffer between the satisfaction and stressful elements of de-cluttering; if you’re unsure, you can leave the ‘maybe’ pile for a couple of weeks while you think about if you need them. More often than not, if you realise that if you haven’t used it in the last 6 months, you probably don’t need it.

  1. Storage struggles

Through the process of moving homes, you may find that you have much more storage than you had before. Don’t fall into the trap of moving clutter from place to place; it’s better to sort through your three piles first before finding homes to store them, so that you have a true representation of the possessions you really need, rather than filling additional space that you lived without previously.

If you’re moving into your first home with a partner or have upsized to make room for all the family, it’s better to have space to grow rather than rummaging through cupboards of unused clutter and constantly tidying the same dust-gathering surface clutter.
