The theme of National Apprenticeship Week 2022 is Build the Future, which is exactly what Yorkshire based Harron Homes is aiming for by supporting Oliver Mordue follow in his father’s footsteps by completing a joinery apprenticeship at Harron’s Oaklands Heath development in Birchencliffe.

After deciding academia wasn’t the route for him, the 19-year-old from Bradford was encouraged by his father, Chris who is also a joiner, to apply to Harron Homes and started his Level 2 Bench Joinery Apprenticeship in September 2021. The course lasts for two years, with a day every week spent at Leeds College of Building, and at the end Oliver will have the opportunity to learn more and hone his skills through the level three course.

Chris has been a subcontractor for Harron for 19 years and worked on several of their Yorkshire sites including Oaklands Heath, and Highfield Manor in nearby Fixby. He said, “I’ve had a few apprentices come through Harron and it’s a great scheme. They’re learning valuable practical skills on site and the theory behind it in college with the potential to walk into a fantastic career.

“I’ve found Harron great to work with over the years and am super proud of Oliver for securing a position with them and seeing how much he’s developed in just a few months.”

“I’m really enjoying the course” Oliver adds. “I’m learning so much each week, and while it’s tough work – especially when it’s this cold! – there’s a great sense of achievement at the end of every day.

“Getting to work with my dad has been a bonus, although with his high standards there’s no chance of slacking off!”

Tony Lee, Managing Director at Harron Homes Yorkshire, says “At Harron we’ve found apprenticeships to be immensely valuable in introducing the younger generation to these skilled jobs, allowing them to develop professionally while providing a fresh perspective to our established teams. It’s fantastic to see this enthusiasm for skilled trades passed down and look forward to seeing Oliver progress with Harron.”
