To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2021, Jacob Mortimer reflects on his time with Harron Homes as he comes to the end of his Technical Apprenticeship.

The 20 year old from Huddersfield finished his college course in 3D Design and Applied Science in 2018 and immediately started looking into apprenticeships.

He said, “After college I didn’t fancy further formal education and felt an apprenticeship would be an ideal way of progressing my career while continuing to learn in a more hands-on environment.

“As a kid, I always loved drawing and figuring out how things work so Harron’s Technical Apprentice position sounded perfect. The opportunity to work in such a great sector for such a prestigious builder was one that couldn’t be turned down!

“There are regular assessments but I’ve found it so much better than sitting in a classroom all day. I spend my days on various projects, working with both the architects and engineers to cover a variety of tasks. The course has given me the unparalleled chance to develop the skills I already had as well as teaching me new ones while working alongside some great people.

“I’m the youngest on the team which has benefitted all of us – I’m learning so much from these experienced team members, and they’re gaining a fresh perspective on projects too.”

Jacob will be concluding his apprenticeship this summer and come out with a Level 3 NVQ and BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment. He’s enjoyed his time with Harron so much he’s hoping to take on a Level 4 apprenticeship next.

“The team have been so supportive throughout my apprenticeship, and it’s been clear that Harron values training and expertise. I’d love to continue my career with them as I aim to work up the ladder to eventually become an Engineering Coordinator.

“My only regret is not starting sooner!”

Tony Lee, Managing Director at Harron Homes Yorkshire, says “At Harron we’re really focused on developing our team and providing them with the opportunities and qualifications to do their job the best they can. In January 2021 alone we dedicated 140 hours to external training. We’re really proud of Jacob and his progress, and look forward to seeing him develop further with us at Harron!”
