Forward-thinking schoolchildren from Matlock, Derbyshire, have buried a time capsule for future generations to uncover at Harron Homes’ nearby Thornberries development.

Pupils from St Joseph’s Catholic Voluntary Academy were invited to bury the capsule during a special event at Thornberries.

The time-travelling canister included pupils’ personal accounts of a typical day at school in 2017, drawings of how they imagine Matlock will look in 50 years’ time, a copy of a local newspaper, and even details on who’s topping the charts right now.

The artefact is not scheduled to be dug up until the year 2067.

Paul Scully, Head Teacher of St Joseph’s Academy, says “We decided that the time capsule would be a really lovely activity for the children to get involved with and would allow them to look back in later life with pride at what they achieved at school.

“In their personal accounts of school, the children have described learning as a really fun experience and one that they look forward to every day, as well as going into plenty of detail about the various ways in which they learn.

“We’ve also seen some really interesting drawings of how the children imagine Matlock will look in 50 years’ time. Pupils have considered the mix of shops that we currently have in the town and have then thought about it might change and grow over time.

“The park has also been at the centre of the designs, and students have been thinking about how the natural world could adapt to life in 2067.

“We are all very excited, especially the children, about the project and it is always a pleasure to work with new developments in the area.”
