The 40-hectare Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve consists of a shallow lagoon edged with reed swamp, fen and flower-rich grassland with scrub and pasture. Paths and hides throughout the site provide excellent opportunities for sighting a wide range of flora and fauna including otters and rare fenland species of flowers, orchids and grasses, as well as birds, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies.

Aldborough was the ‘capital’ of the Romanised Brigantes, the largest tribe in Britain at that time. The site’s museum has an outstanding collection of Roman finds including two fantastic Roman mosaics and a section of the original town wall.
